Bioethics, Social Justice, and Health Equity in Medicine Fund

Why Give?

The Center for Bioethics and Social Justice is a small group with big aspirations. We critically engage with clinicians, researchers, and policymakers to help build a world in which conditions of social justice make health achievable for all. Our scholars have advocated for social justice efforts that would improve the health of communities, such as: reforming health insurance policies to expand access for people with low incomes, identifying and eliminating subtle racial biases in medical education and practice, and recognizing that everyone has a right to safe housing and clean water. We see our center as carrying on the spirit of the original land-grant mission of Michigan State University, dedicating our work to serving the needs of the people.

This African-American mother was shown in the process of teaching her young son how to properly wash his hands at their kitchen sink, briskly rubbing his soapy hands together under fresh running tap water, in order to remove germs, and contaminants, thereby, reducing the spread of pathogens, and the ingestion of environmental chemicals or toxins.Resource limitations make it so that we can only pursue a fraction of the community outreach work we would like to do: public lectures, brief introductions for non-experts about current ethical debates in healthcare, creating forums where local non-profits and scholars can meet to discuss shared goals, talking to the media, and so on. Small gifts allow us to do more of our existing lines of public service work. Larger gifts make it possible for us to expand the range of work we do. We ask you to join the center with an investment in social justice and health equity.

If you would like to help the Center for Bioethics and Social Justice pursue its vision, please consider making a tax-deductible gift using one of the methods outlined below. We are grateful for any gift, no matter how small. If you’d like to discuss how your gift might be used, or how you might help support a major initiative, please contact Center Director Sean A. Valles at center@msu.edu.

Gifts to Michigan State University are tax-deductible as provided by law and may qualify you for state of Michigan tax credits and federal tax deductions. Please check with your financial adviser on how your gifts may affect your tax situation.

Corporate Matching Gifts

Many companies also offer matching-gift programs as a benefit to their employees. If you work at one of the 1,000-plus U.S. companies that have matching-gift programs, you can dramatically increase the impact your gift makes. Visit the Giving to Michigan State University website to search employers.

These companies recognize the importance of private support for higher education, and will match their employees' gifts, often 1:1 and sometimes more. The entire gift—your contribution and your employer's match—is credited to you and counts toward membership in one of Michigan State University's donor recognition societies (please note that the company's matching gift credit is for MSU recognition only and not for tax purposes). Please check with your employer's personnel office to see if your company offers this benefit.

Here is a step-by-step guide to a successful matching gift:

Step 1: Make your gift to the Center for Bioethics and Social Justice.
Checks can be mailed to:
Center for Bioethics and Social Justice
College of Human Medicine
965 Wilson Rd, Rm A-126
East Lansing, MI 48824

Or, you can make your credit card gift online safely and securely. Be sure to complete the matching gift section at the bottom of the input screen.

Step 2: Complete your company's matching gift form.
Most companies have matching gift forms readily available for their employees. In addition, MSU has some forms available online. Follow this link to search by employer or company name.

Step 3: Mail your completed matching gift form to the Office of Development. After you have completed and signed your company's matching gift form, mail it to:
