In keeping with the mission of the Center for Ethics, a number of partnerships, memberships, and programs which have been established in effort to further community understanding and involvement in bioethics matters. The Center, with the valued support of the law firm of Hall Render Killian Heath & Lyman, coordinates a lecture and discussion series four times per year under the title “Bioethics for Breakfast” at the University Club of Michigan State University. Brews and Views events are moderated discussions addressing fascinating and provocative areas of bioscience and engineering. The series is a collaboration between the Institute for Quantitative Health Science and Engineering (IQ) and the Center for Ethics and Humanities in the Life Sciences that began in the fall of 2017. These casual discussions engage researchers and scholars in considering the implications of innovative biomedical research for patients, people, animals, and populations. Center faculty provide clinical ethics consultation services for Sparrow Health System and McLaren-Lansing Health Care. Faculty sit on each hospital’s ethics committee and serve as on-call consultants to help identify, analyze, and resolve values conflicts and ethical dilemmas that occur in the hospital. Faculty also advise on ethics related hospital policies and provide frequent educational training through Ethics Grand Rounds, debriefings with particular units, and workshops with ethics committee members and medical residents.
