With the generous support of the U.S. National Institutes of Health Fogarty International Center we are engaged in a four-year international bioethics training program dedicated to enhancing bioethics capacity in Sub-Saharan Africa. Building on an international partnership with the University of Malawi College of Medicine our training grant will assist African scholars to develop active research and teaching programs in the area of research ethics. Principal Investigator: Tom Tomlinson, University of Malawi Professor; Joseph Mfutso-Bengo, and Assistant Visiting Fogarty Professor: Paul Ndebele.
Call for Applicants: Training Fellowships in International Research Ethics
The University of Malawi College of Medicine and Michigan State University invite applicants for a training program in international research ethics. The first Fogarty fellow, Edward Chigwedere, began at MSU in 2005. Three trainees, Mike Kachedwa, Veronica Maluwa, and Rose Mwangi have begun training in 2006, and one additional trainee will be selected to start in 2007. The selection process is ongoing with applications considered through March of the year for which application is being made.
The goal of the 15-month program is to enable individuals with outstanding research or scholarly potential to develop a sustainable research and teaching program in the field of international research ethics. After completing advanced course work and independent study at Michigan State University and the University of Malawi, fellows will design and conduct a research or scholarly project under the guidance of mentors from both universities, who will continue to assist the fellow until the project report is accepted for publication in a peer-reviewed journal. With guidance from their mentors, fellows will also design a course relating to research ethics, to be taught at their home institution. At the completion of all requirements, fellows will receive an advanced Certificate of Scholarship in International Research Ethics. Approval for the granting of a Master’s in Public Health in Research Ethics from the University of Malawi is pending.
During their 4-month residence at Michigan State University (August 15 - December), fellows will receive a stipend of US$2500/month, plus living expenses of US$1200/month. For the remainder of the training period at the University of Malawi College of Medicine, fellows will receive a salary supplement of US$1500/month. All transportation costs to and from the United States will be covered, as will all course tuition and fees at both universities. In addition, each fellow will receive an internet-capable laptop computer.
Applicants must:
- be residents of Malawi or a country contiguous with Malawi;
- have at least a Master’s (M.A., M.S., M.Phil, M.P.H. or equivalent) or M.D. degree. At least one of the applicant’s post-secondary degrees must be from a university in which the primary language of instruction is English;
- already hold a position at their institution for which scholarship, research, or teaching are primary responsibilities;
- be able to secure their institution’s support for their undertaking the fellowship training and for their subsequent scholarship and teaching in the field of international research ethics.
To apply, applicants should submit:
- a 2-page letter explaining their interest and qualifications for undertaking the fellowship;
- A curriculum vita or resume;
- 3 letters of recommendation. One of these should be from a responsible institutional official who offers to grant the individual a paid leave during the 15-month training period, and pledges the institution’s continuing support for the individual’s work in international research ethics after the completion of the fellowship;
- One or more samples of written work (in English), preferably examples of previous scholarly or research reports.
- Applications for the 2007 training program will not be accepted before January 15, 2007.
