Edward Chigwedere is a visiting scholar who comes to MSU's Center for Ethics and Humanities in the Life Sciences (CEHLS) from the University of Zimbabwe's Clinical Research Center (UZ-CRC). He is one of the first fellows to join us as part of a four-year research and bioethics training program, "Training for Scholarship in Research Ethics", funded by the Fogarty International Center of the US National Institutes of Health. This program represents a partnership between CEHLS at Michigan State University and the University of Malawi College of Medicine. As a visiting scholar and trainee, Edward is engaged in various relevant activities including attending MSU research ethics classes and sitting as a shadow reviewer on the University's Institutional Review Board.
Edward completed a Masters in Population Studies at the University of Zimbabwe in 2002. He has been engaged in social science and clinical HIV/AIDS research for the past six years. This has involved developing study protocols, coordinating and managing research/field activities, developing quality assurance measures, analyzing data, training and supervising research assistants, reviewing research proposals submitted by students, and presenting research papers. Most of Edward's research work has been collaborative research between the University of Zimbabwe, Department of Medicine and the Medical Research Council Clinical Trials Unit, UK; the University of Zimbabwe departments of Community Medicine, Pediatrics, Obstetrics and Gynecology and University of California San Francisco.
Research Interests:
His main areas of research interest are within bioethics (notably ethical
dilemmas in AIDS treatment), HIV/AIDS prevention and treatment and behavioral
research in general. Currently he is also the Principal Investigator of a
study on knowledge, attitudes and sexual practice of patients on antiretroviral
treatment with the UZ-CRC.
